How Does YBTC.B Work?
YBTC.B is a yield-bearing Bitcoin token on Avalanche that lets you earn DeFi returns on your BTC without selling it. Your BTC is locked in Bitlayer's BitVM Bridge and deployed into various yield strategies across multiple chains. With $87M TVL, it is a mid-size protocol offering automated BTC yield through a novel cross-chain infrastructure.

Core Mechanisms
Bridge/BitVM-Bridge
NovelBitVM Bridge securing BTC deposits with cryptographic verification for cross-chain YBTC minting
YBTC is backed 1:1 by real BTC locked in the BitVM Bridge. BitVM claims mathematical certainty over social trust, but the technology is still early-stage with limited battle-testing. Represents a third-generation BTC wrapping approach.
Token/Yield-Bearing-Wrapper
NovelYBTC.B on Avalanche: yield-bearing BTC token that accrues DeFi and CeDeFi vault returns
YBTC.B wraps BTC.B (Avalanche bridged Bitcoin) into a yield-bearing representation. Yield comes from LP farming, lending, and fixed-income RWA strategies across multiple chains. Novel combination of cross-chain BTC bridging with automated yield.
Vault/Multi-Strategy
DeFi and CeDeFi vaults deploying BTC across LP farming, lending, and fixed-income RWAs
Multiple vault strategies generate yield on deposited BTC. Strategies include LP provision, lending markets, and tokenized real-world assets. Each strategy introduces its own risk profile.
Bridge/Cross-Chain-CCIP
Chainlink CCIP integration for cross-chain YBTC transfers between EVM chains
Bitlayer migrated to Chainlink CCIP as canonical cross-chain infrastructure. YBTC.B is available on Ethereum, BSC, Avalanche, and Plume Network via CCIP.
Oracle/Price-Feed
External price feeds for BTC/YBTC.B exchange rate and vault NAV calculation
Relies on external oracles for accurate BTC pricing and vault net asset value calculations. Oracle manipulation could affect minting/redemption rates.
Yield/Auto-Compound
Automated reward compounding across vault strategies
Vaults automatically compound yields from various strategies back into the underlying BTC position. Flexible redemption mechanisms allow withdrawal.
How the Pieces Interact
If the BitVM Bridge custody mechanism is compromised or the underlying BTC becomes inaccessible, YBTC.B loses its 1:1 backing and depegs from BTC. The novel BitVM verification has not been stress-tested under adversarial conditions at scale.
Yield strategies span multiple chains via CCIP. A CCIP outage or chain-level failure could strand BTC in external vaults, preventing timely redemptions and creating temporary depeg pressure on YBTC.B.
CeDeFi vaults involve centralized counterparties for yield generation. If a counterparty defaults or strategy fails, the vault's NAV drops below the BTC backing, leading to losses for YBTC.B holders during redemption.
Stale or manipulated price feeds could allow arbitrageurs to mint YBTC.B below fair value or redeem above fair value, slowly draining vault reserves.
What Could Go Wrong
- BitVM Bridge trust assumptions are novel and largely unproven at scale; mathematical certainty claims mask underlying multi-sig fallback mechanisms
- Cross-chain BTC wrapping introduces bridge risk — if the underlying BTC custodial mechanism fails, YBTC.B depegs from BTC
- Yield strategies across CeDeFi vaults introduce counterparty risk from external yield sources with opaque strategy details
BitVM Bridge Custody Failure
ModerateTrigger: A critical vulnerability in the BitVM Bridge verification logic is discovered, allowing an attacker to drain the underlying BTC reserves or making them permanently inaccessible
- 1.Attacker exploits BitVM Bridge verification vulnerability to withdraw BTC without burning YBTC tokens — YBTC.B loses partial or full BTC backing; reserve ratio drops below 1:1
- 2.On-chain reserve proof shows deficit; YBTC.B market price crashes on secondary markets — YBTC.B depegs from BTC; holders face 30-80% loss depending on drain severity
- 3.Cross-chain CCIP transfers are paused as YBTC.B on all chains reflects the same broken backing — Liquidity across Ethereum, BSC, Avalanche, and Plume evaporates; LP providers in YBTC.B pools face impermanent loss
- 4.CeDeFi vaults holding YBTC.B as collateral face bad debt as collateral value drops — Contagion spreads to lending protocols and yield strategies that accepted YBTC.B as a BTC-equivalent asset
